Turkey-flavored ice cream may not be for everyone, but at least this is a little more unexpected than your average Thanksgiving dinner.
Portland-based ice cream shop Salt & Straw, which also has three Bay Area outposts, is well known for getting experimental in the flavor department.
Last spring, the San Francisco outposts teamed up with students from local elementary schools for an ice cream inventing assignment that produced outlandish flavors like a rose and lavender-infused sherbet bedazzled with edible green glitter and nacho flavor, featuring cheddar cheese ice cream with tomato jam, candied tortilla chips and avocado fudge.
Now, just in time for the holiday season, Salt & Straw will once again be serving up a 5-course Thanksgiving dinner’s worth of flavors from stuffing to pie.
Salted Caramel Thanksgiving Turkey consists of turkey brittle in a turkey fat caramel ice cream; Roasted Peach & Sage Cornbread Stuffing is made with sage ice cream, with cornbread brown sugar shortbread cookies, spiced peach jam and peach vinegar; Sweet Potato Casserole has maple syrup marshmallow fluff and homemade candied pecans mixed in sweet potato ice cream; Spiced Goat Cheese & Pumpkin Pie features “local goat cheese, and streaks of fresh baked pumpkin pie filling”; and for the vegans, there’s Roasted Cranberry Sauce Sorbet.
Flavors are available between now and November 21. You can also order online.
Note: for each pint purchased during November, the Hayes Valley (586 Hayes St.) and Pacific Heights (2201 Fillmore St.) ice cream shops will donate a pint to Food Runners. The Burlingame (1309 Burlingame Ave.) shop will donate to Peninsula Food Runners.
