Ooof, fair enough. I think the message at the end was supposed to be an example of how difficult it can be to allocate funding when there’s so little of it going around, and some of the problems conservationists have to deal with.
The dumbing down aspect is interesting though. There’s a professor in my department who insists that the concept of subspecies is an oversimplification because it’s basically taxonomists saying they don’t like variation with a species so they have to split it up to let themselves sleep. But I’ve met people at conferences who hate that we just lump all these populations with such massive differences into one box.
