This Is the Best Reusable Straw – Architectural Digest

I feel like I never cared much about drinking straws until it became a thing I should have an opinion on. (Is there a long, beautiful, untranslatable word for that?) Combine that with a quest for living a more sustainable life, and I’m now spending hours researching the best small pipe for conveniently consuming a beverage. But what is life if not toiling the hours on small joys like a colorful straw? So, here are my personal judgments:

Plastic: Obviously, we all hate it and plastic straws are evil. Paper and cardboard straws are disgusting pieces of mush—they’re only worth it if you are going to finish your drink in less than five minutes, but I want to make my cold brew last through one morning meeting. Bamboo straws are decent if you like the taste of toothpicks and having a sort of vegetal flavor in your mouth along with your drink. Stainless steel straws are also fine, but you can’t see through them to discover the horrors of grim build-up (you just have to hope you are thoroughly scrubbing the interior), and they often get too cold (bad for sensitive-teeth people). Personally, there’s something about a metal straw hitting my teeth that gives me the same sensation as nails on a chalkboard—sorry!

You probably think I’m a Negative Nancy at this point, but alas, I have a favorite straw and, shockingly, it’s glass. Initially, I got these Poketo glass straws because they look nice—the lovely array of cool and warm tones from green to blue and yellow to orange—but I was even more thrilled to find they are great for drinking and easy to maintain. The glass is incredibly durable—I’ve dropped them on tile floors by accident as well as for the sake of journalism, and no damage was done. I can stash them in a little travel case. I can keep them at my desk in a colorful bouquet. People will stop to tell you that you look extra nice when you’re sipping your iced coffee from them. They come with a nice little pipe cleaner–like brush for easy washing, and at about $6 per straw, the payoff will come quick. Do the earth, your coffee, and your teeth a favor: Invest in these straws!
