Why do we prioritize health and survival of honey bees in the USA, as opposed to native bees?
When I first learned that honey bees were not native to the USA (or even the Western hemisphere?), it was a real surprise because they are just so embedded in our culture and landscape. And a big story of the past few years has been the honey bee collapse.
However, it also seems to me like we concentrate so much on the health and survival of the honey bee in the USA, but you do not hear much about native bees. Why is that? Wouldn’t the ecology of the USA be better served by ensuring the survival and flourishing of native bees?
